What is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM) coverage helps protect you if you’re in an accident with someone who either doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough to cover the damage.

What’s covered?*

  • Bodily injuries: If you’re injured in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver, UM coverage can help pay for your medical bills, lost wages, and other related expenses.
  • Hit-and-run accidents: If you’re involved in a hit-and-run and the driver can’t be identified, UM coverage can help cover your injuries.
  • Property damages: UM coverage can help pay for damages to your car or property when caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver (applies to Georgia policyholders only)

*Only applies if the uninsured/underinsured motorist is at fault and your policy has uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

All coverages are subject to deductibles and policy limits. This is not an insurance policy. It is intended only to provide a general description of Alfa Insurance® and/or its product lines and services. An actual policy contains the specific details of the coverages, conditions, and exclusions. The Rice Agency can explain the policy and benefits and answer any questions you may have before you buy.

What’s the difference between uninsured and underinsured?

  • Uninsured refers to an at-fault driver who doesn’t have car insurance.
  • Underinsured refers to an at-fault driver who doesn’t have enough coverage to pay for damages after a car accident.

How much Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage do you need?

The amount of coverage you need depends on your budget and how much protection you’re looking for. Many people choose to match their UM coverage to their liability limits, which is a smart move. Just keep in mind that the state minimum may not be enough to cover serious injuries or damages. Talk to your agent about what might work best for you.

In what scenarios would Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage apply?

UM coverage can help if you’re involved in a hit-and-run and can’t identify the driver, you’re hit by someone who only has the state’s minimum coverage and can’t pay for all the damage, or you’re walking or biking and get hit by a driver with little or no car insurance.

Percentage of uninsured drivers by state

In 2023, one in three U.S. drivers was either uninsured or underinsured. If you’re in an accident—especially in another state—there’s a real chance the other driver might not be able to cover the damages.
